Calculation Formula & Methodology

A Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) calculates wealth accumulation using the compound annuity formula: M = P × [((1 + i)^n - 1) ÷ i] × (1 + i), where M is Maturity Amount, P is Monthly SIP Contribution, i is Periodic Monthly Rate (Annual Return % ÷ 12 ÷ 100), and n is Total Months.

Example: ₹10,000 monthly SIP for 15 years at an expected 12% annual return

Inputs: Monthly Investment = ₹10,000 | Tenure = 15 years (180 months) | Expected Return = 12% p.a.

Calculation: Total Invested = ₹18,00,000 | Estimated Capital Gains = ₹32,45,760

Outcome: Estimated Maturity Value = ₹50,45,760

Key Insights & Financial Takeaways

  • Rupee Cost Averaging: By investing a fixed amount regularly, you buy more mutual fund units when market prices drop and fewer units when prices rise, smoothing volatility.
  • The Compound Interest Snowball: In the example above, while your personal investment was ₹18 Lakh, the accumulated interest gain is over ₹32 Lakh—nearly double the invested capital.
  • Step-Up SIP Advantage: Increasing your monthly SIP by just 10% annually can boost your final 15-year retirement corpus by more than 40%.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an ideal expected return rate for equity mutual fund SIPs?

Historically, broad Indian equity indices (Nifty 50, Sensex) have delivered 11% to 14% annualized compound returns over 10-15+ year investment horizons, though market returns are not guaranteed.

What happens if I miss a monthly SIP installment?

Missing an SIP payment does not cancel your investment or attract mutual fund penalties; the fund house simply skips that month's purchase, and future installments continue.

Is SIP return guaranteed?

No. Mutual fund investments are subject to market risks. SIP reduces volatility through dollar/rupee cost averaging over long tenures.
